WITCH'S BALL No. 7
The handblown glass orbs in this series are reminiscent of Witch's Balls, artifacts dating back to the 1700s in England and later, the seafaring towns of New England where I grew up. They were hung in windows as a talisman to ward off evil spirits and used as scrying glasses to peer into the future (perhaps the real-world origin of the crystal ball?). Many centuries ago they evolved from simple packing cases; when delicate glass items were shipped to faraway lands, another glass bubble was blown around them to protect them for their journey. While you can still find antique witch's balls today if you search for them, they're much larger than you would want to wear as jewelry.
